This summer the Churches of Teesside united together in a really practical way to Serve our local area. We approached our three local councils and asked how we could serve them if we mobilised hundreds of volunteers for a summer of service. Serve Teesside was born.
The councils put us in touch with community groups, ward councillors, parks teams, area care staff, local housing associations, allotment groups and over the months of June and July we sent out 37 different teams to projects all over our city. In total 750 volunteers from 25 churches gave more than 5200 serve hours. We painted community centres, transformed back alleys, cleaned roads, picked litter, dug over allotments, painted murals and generally served and loved our city.
It was amazing to see so many different churches and traditions coming together under one banner simply to serve. Next year we are hoping to build upon the momentum built this year and have even greater impact!
